Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
