EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
